Medicare Basics
Medicare Part A
Hospital insurance that covers inpatient hospital visits. It can also help cover skilled nursing facility stays, hospice and home health care. If you or your spouse paid medicare taxes while working, you should not have to pay for Part A.
Medicare Part B
Medical Insurance that helps cover doctor visits, outpatient services and home health care. You must pay a monthly premium for part B.
Medicare Part C
A Medicare Advantage Plan. A private insurance company contracts with Medicare to combine your Part A and Part B (usually prescriptions too). The insurance company dispenses your benefits instead of the Government. More on Medicare Advantage Plans…
Medicare Part D
Standardized Prescription Coverage that must be purchased through private insurance companies. If you choose not to enroll in Part D, you will pay a penalty if you decide to sign up later.

I’m not happy with my current Medicare Plan. Can I switch plans?
When do I become eligible for Medicare?
You become eligible to receive Medicare the 1st day of the month that you turn 65. If you are under age 65 and disabled, you will receive Medicare after your 24th month of disability benefits.
Do I need to apply for medicare?
If you are already receiving Social Security when you turn 65, you will automatically be enrolled in Medicare. If you aren’t receiving Social Security (for example because you are still working), you will need to apply for Medicare.
Do I need medicare supplement insurance?
There is no requirement to get Medicare supplement insurance, but it would benefit you to explore your options. With Medicare Part A and B only, you will have deductibles and copays, and there is no cap on the out of pocket expenses you could incur.
What is the difference between a medicare supplement and a medicare advantage plan?
A Medicare supplement plan is a policy through a private insurance company that helps pay for gaps in coverage that Medicare doesn’t cover. A Medicare Advantage plan is a policy through a private insurance company (usually an HMO or PPO) that replaces your Original Medicare coverage.
I’m not happy with my current Medicare Plan. Can I switch plans?
Yes, you can switch plans, but only at certain times of the year. The most flexible enrollment period is the Annual Election Period, Nov 15- Dec 31st. During this time you can switch between any plan types.
