Day 16 of 90 day trial with Gabriel Cousens’ Rainbow Green Live-Food Cuisine

day 15                                                                                                                                           day 17

So much for planning…

This was my breakfast today.

Radishes for breakfast?

I woke up on shopping day and realized my raw food choices were almost completely wiped out! Luckily I had a few of the onion flax crackers left for something filling. Otherwise I don’t know what I would’ve eaten.

Raw food on the go

Shortly after heading out to shop, the hunger set in pretty quickly. On my 5 store excursion, I found myself getting hungrier by the store. Finally, 2nd to last stop: Trader Joe’s! I purchased a handy snack to munch on while driving.

I finally reached my last stop of the day: Cream of the Crop, my absolute favorite organic market/health food store in Oceanside.

Then tragedy struck.

They were out of raw tahini!

I was beside myself! I have been so dependent on tahini every day, using it for a healthy spread, or as a base for salad dressing. Another local health food store didn’t even carry the raw verion.

This is one of the drawbacks of being a raw foodist, and clearly demonstrates the importance of planning. It helps to shop online, and buy in bulk. I had only gotten one jar of the tahini, because I wasn’t sure if I’d really like it. Through trial and error, I’m getting a good idea of what I’ll need on a month to month basis.

Learn to improvise

To make up for the absence of tahini, I bought some raw organic sesame seeds and will attempt to make a tahini sauce using a recipe in “Rainbow Green Live-Food Cuisine.”

I wasn’t planning to place another online order until the end of January, so I may have to wait two weeks until I can have my delicious tahini again. Bummer!

Going with the flow

By the time I returned from shopping, I was still starving. I munched on the rest of my onion flax crackers (about 3), and some walnuts and pecans as I put groceries away.

(These nuts are probably not truly raw, even though the bulk bin said raw. At least they are organic. It’s difficult to be 100% raw, 100% of the time).

Before I prepped my main course, I ate a portion of blanched broccoli I prepared for my family’s meal. Yes, this is technically cooked. I choose to eat partially cooked broccoli (10 sec in boiling water) a few times per week because it’s a welcome change in the winter, and I don’t believe this is harmful at all.

Blanched broccoli is quickly becoming one of my favorite foods! I could eat a huge bowl of this for a meal. I simply drizzle olive oil over it, sprinkle with garlic powder and sea salt. Delicious every time!

After cooking for the family, I made Italian dressing (from day 10, scroll down) again from the Rainbow Green Live-Food Cuisine book. Here’s the ingredients before blending:

I’m still amazed at how delicious this dressing is. I need to make a double batch next time!

My salad creation

This is one of the most delicious salads I’ve ever had! I’m going to name it “Powerhouse Salad” because of the combo of healthy ingredients all in one.

Powerhouse Salad

I started out with about 5 large kale leaves, torn and massaged with salt. Once they softened, I added some dandelion greens, romaine, cucumber, sugar plum tomatoes, and lots of hemp seeds – all enough to fill a large bowl. This salad is extremely filling and satisfying as a main course. The flavor would work well with adding additional vegetables if desired. I’ll be having this again for sure!

Today demonstrated how to improvise (when lacking a decent breakfast food), and go with the flow (buy a raw snack to curb hunger on the road), during a busy day.

I don’t always mention how much I drink my lemon water and stevia drops. I wouldn’t be able to get by without it! I had about 4 tall glasses of it today. The sweetness is such a treat, and always gets me through cravings.

I also had supplemental spirulina tabs, morning and late afternoon.

Exercise

My run today felt extremely sluggish. I upped my distance from 1 1/2 to 2 miles. Even though it was tough, and my muscles are feeling it after, overall my body and mind feel great this evening.

How is your raw food journey going?

(What’s this trial all about?)
