The Importance of Planning
Day 15
January 15th, 2010
We plan for so many things in our lives: retirement, financial goals, travel, what to wear, etc. Many people fail to plan for their health. It takes planning to ensure you make the right choices. Planning is a pain in the ass (but your health is worth it)!
I attribute a huge part of my raw-food success to planning. It makes me more conscious of my choices, and prepares me for busy days and social events when it is difficult to eat raw.
As I sit down to plan for the upcoming week, I must assess what I have left in my pantry and what foods/meals I have, and have not enjoyed.
Winners and Losers
Tahini is a defiite winner! I’m almost out,and hoping to find a reasonably priced store bought variety. I only purchased one jar on my internet order for the month of January. I had no idea how much of a staple it would become! Two jars per month will be a necessity in the future.
Hemp seeds were a huge win. I ended up liking them far more than expected, and now feel it was a waste to put them in smoothies. They taste too good for that! I enjoy them in crackers, salads, and think they’d be great added to pesto. My little 8oz bag from mail order didn’t last. I will order them in bulk next time.
Another winner – almond milk. I’ll continue to make this, as well as crackers from the pulp.
Dandelion greens have grown on me over the past two weeks. I discovered many health benefits of this nutritious green by reading about it online. Definitely a regular from here on out.
The almond butter was just ok, but it was still satisfying and I easily made it through one jar in two weeks. I’ve heard people say that truly raw almond butter is not as good as toasted almond butter. They are right. Surprisingly, my failed attempt at making almond butter is filling in, and will be a regular in the coming weeks.
Stuff I haven’t been using.
I want to make note that on my prep page for this trial, I listed the ingredients that I purchased through mail order. One was a hemp protein/E3(algae)/maca protein powder. I later realized that maca should be used only on Phase 1.5, so I decided to start using it in month 2. I also found that coconut butter should wait until Phase 1.5, so I’ve been holding off on that for now.
Breakfast options
Until I can start having blueberries and my protein mix for smoothies, my breakfast choices are limited (however avocado has been great on a few occasions)!
I’ll likely stick to the almond milk and cereal, or almond pulp crackers with spread for breakfast.
Lunch options
Lunch will continue to be various salads, with crackers and spreads. One thing I haven’t tried much is veggies with dip, so I’ll attempt that this week.
Dinners
I’m feeling really uninspired for dinners right now. I’m just going to wing it. I’ve found that I feel way less pressure, and enjoy the food more, when I prepare something in the moment. It’s still important to plan for some potential meals before you shop (make sure to purchase the staples), but there’s always room for spontaneity.
Today’s Food
Breakfast

The last few Impromptu Crackers w/ “Almond Butter Fail” spread.
Lunch

Onion flax crackers, pico de gallo, and guacamole. I forgot to snap a photo until my plate was half empty. This meal is so filling and satisfying!
Snack

The remainder of my jar of Tahini with onion flax crackers and sea salt.
Dinner

Zucchini noodles with pistachio pesto.
This portion was larger than it looks and so filling! I still got this strange craving episode, and finished off my pistachio pesto with a fork out of the jar. It was so yummy, I couldn’t resist. Felt a bit of salt overload after, but drank lots that evening.
It seems like I didn’t eat much today looking at the pics, but with the guacamole/cracker/pico lunch, and that filling dinner with the dense pesto, it was all I needed.
Thanks for stopping by!
(Don’t forget to plan for your health)!
